Tweaks to Speed Up Your Computer’s Boot Time

Most Of us hate the delay of rebooting our computer, It may be just 2 or 3 minutes, but we feel like it's very longer. Back to the point, I found some tips to make the boot time less than the usual.
But I have my own way of get rid of this booting delay. I never shutdown, I JUST HIBERNATE. :) Pretty easy huh? Ok, This post will explain how to make your computer boots faster.

Clean Up Your Desktop

When your PC boots, It has to load all documents, pictures,Icons, etc which you placed in your desktop.. It may also take a bit of time, specially, when you set a high res wall paper with high quality, It'll steal some seconds.

Tweak Your BIOS

When you first set up your computer, your BIOS is set up to make things a bit more convenient for you, but once you're all set up, those things can be disabled. If you hold the DEL key when you start up your computer (or whatever key your BIOS tells you to enter setup), you can turn on the "Quick Boot" option and move your hard disk to the top of the boot priority list. The Quick Boot setting will turn off the tests your computer runs when it first turns on, and the boot priority tweak will tell your computer not to look for CDs, thumb drives, or other media when it first starts, which will get you booted into your OS quicker. If you ever need to boot from CD though, you'll have to go back into the BIOS and change this again before you do.

Clean Out Programs that Launch at Startup

One of the most tried and true ways to speed up your boot process is to keep unnecessary programs from starting up with your computer. You can do this by running msconfig from the Start Menu's search box, and going to the Startup tab. This applications list will tell you what each of those applications does, so you know which ones you can disable and which ones you don't want to. Previously mentioned Soluto is also a fantastic way to clean up these programs, and these days it's got a bunch of other handy features that make it worth a download.

Delay Windows Services That Run at Startup

Many people argue that disabling Services from msconfig will also speed up your boot time, but we've found that this is more problematic than anything. However, you can delay certain startup services so that your computer boots quickly and then worries about them later—after all, you don't need all those services the minute you start up your machine.

Change Your Boot Menu's Timeout Values

If you're dual-booting your machine, then your boot menu probably has a "timeout value", meaning the amount of time it waits for you to make a selection before it just boots into the default OS. On Windows, this timeout value is often 30 seconds, which is a long time to wait if you aren't looking directly at your screen. To change this timeout value, head to msconfig and click on the BOOT.INI tab, and change the number in the timeout box to something lower. If you're dual-booting with Linux, you're probably running the GRUB boot menu, and you can change the timeout on that too.

Disable Unused Hardware

Your computer loads a lot of drivers when it first starts up, some of which you might not even use. Head into the Device Manager from the Start Menu's search box, and look for anything you aren't using—Bluetooth controllers, modems, and virtual Wi-Fi adapters are common culprits. Right-click on the entry you want to disable and hit "Disable". Remember to only do this with things you don't actually use—if you use Wireless Hosted Networks, you'll need to keep those virtual Wi-Fi adapters enabled. It's also worth mentioning here that keeping all your drivers up to date will help this portion of the startup time, too (which you can do with the help of a program like previously mentioned Device Doctor).

Keep Your Antivirus Running and Up to Date

This should go without saying, but we'll say it anyway: install some antivirus software, keep it up to date, and run a regular scan. This is more of a preventative measure than an actual boot-speeding tip, but if you ever do get malware, it's sure to slow your computer's boot time. With a good antivirus around like Microsoft Security Essentials, you'll be more protected against that happening. Don't like MSE? There are some great ones out there too, so there's no reason not to have one around.

Remove Unnecessary Fonts

Since the dawn of time, Windows has loaded fonts at startup and slowed down the boot time. This is less of a problem than it used to be, but it can still slow you down a bit. Windows 7 loads over 200 fonts at startup; even more if you've installed Microsoft Office. Chances are, you use very few of those fonts, so you can hide them to speed up that process. In Windows 7, open up the Fonts folder from the Start Menu's search box, and check off all the fonts you don't need. Then click the "Hide" button in the toolbar. This way, if you ever want them, you can bring them back, but Windows won't load them at startup. Note that just removing a few fonts probably isn't going to make a noticeable difference—you'll probably need to get rid of a few hundred. That said, you might have hundreds more fonts installed than you realized, so that isn't as ridiculous as it sounds.

Upgrade Your RAM

Installing more RAM has always been an effective way of speeding up your computer, and that hasn't changed. RAM is pretty cheap these days, so if you're running low, there's no reason not to stock up and make your computer run a little smoother. We've gone over how to replace it in both a desktop and a laptop, and even for the inexperienced, it's a pretty simple procedure.

Give Your Computer a Static IP

When you first start up your computer, it spends a significant amount of time asking the network for an IP address. You can get rid of this process altogether by giving your computer a static IP address that never changes. Not only does this make your network easier to manage (since each computer will always have the same IP address), but it can shave a bit more time off your startup. Here's how to do it in different versions of Windows.

Install a Solid State Drive (SSD)

These days, your hard drive is probably the biggest bottleneck in your machine. One of the best upgrades you can make to your computer is to install a solid state drive, which has super-fast read times that can speed up your startup considerably. They're certainly not a cheap upgrade, nor are they without their own maintenance requirements, but if you want to speed up your computer and its boot time, you can't go wrong by installing an SSD. The difference will be shocking.

Thanks LifeHacker for the tips..

Solution for the VBscript Engine Not found Error(Customizing Desktop)

Some of our guys experienced an error while trying to shutdown from the shutdown button on the customized desktop.

Usually some Antivirus vendors replace the original VBscript dll to ensure no bad scripts should be executed on the computer. There is some tweaks to re-enable VBscript engine, you can find it in google. But I don't recommend that because it may make your computer vulnerable. If you still want to do it, please go to bottom of this post.
So, I came up with another alternative solution which we can use bat files to do the shutdown, logoff and restart. I already explained how to make such bat files on my post about Shutdown your PC remotely using Email / Mobile. However  I'll give you the step by step instruction.

      A. Create a text file and type "shutdown.exe -s -t 00" without quotes and     save it as shut.bat(change .txt to .bat)
      B. Create a text file and type "shutdown.exe -r -t 00" without quotes and save  it as res.bat(change .txt to .bat)

      C. Create a text file and type "shutdown.exe -l -t 00" without quotes and save it as log.bat(change .txt to .bat)

02. Navigate to Documents/Rainmeter folder and create a new folder named Scripts, then copy all three bat files to that folder.
Note down the file paths (eg: C:\users\Admin\Documents\Rainmeter\Scripts)

03. Right Click on the shutdown button on your desktop, then click edit skin.

04. Find the following Code snippet

     LeftMouseDownAction=!Execute ["#SystemPath#wscript.exe"
    and replace the part ["#SystemPath#wscript.exe"
"#CurrentPath#SysTray.vbs"] with ["C:\Users\ADMIN\Documents\Rainmeter\Scripts\log.bat"] (Remember this path must be the path you placed your bat files. My account name is ADMIN so it came as ["C:\Users\ADMIN\Documents\Rainmeter\Scripts\log.bat"], but it may differ in your case.

04. Do the same for [Shutdown] and [Restart] snippets too.. Remember to give the correct bat file, for shutdown shut.bat and Restart res.bat.

05. Click Save and close.

06. Right Click the shutdown button and click refresh skin. That's it. You are done..

Enabling VB Script Engine:

1. try to register vbscript dll
Open a command prompt as Administrator and type "regsvr32 vbscript.dll"
2. If registering didn't solve the issue, probably your Antivirus vendor has changed the registry value

If your vbscript dll was disabled by your antivirus, you can enable it by editing the registry key. In my case, McAfee antivirus changed the registry as follows.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes \ CLSID \ {B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8} \ InprocServer32]
@ = "C: \ \ Program Files \ \ Common Files \ \ McAfee \ \ SystemCore \ \ ScriptSn.20101116171926.dll"
"ThreadingModel" = "Both"

So, I changed it back to

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes \ CLSID \ {B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8} \ InprocServer32]
@ = "C: \ \ Windows \ \ System32 \ \ vbscript.dll"
"ThreadingModel" = "Both"

Note: In a 64 bit machine, the path will be

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}\InprocServer32

Custom Desktop..(Give a new attractive look to your desktop..)

Today I come a cross with Desktop Customization which gives a new, attractive and Geek look to your desktop.. It is not only attractive, but also useful too.. There is a popular app called Rainmeter which help us to do all the customization.. And download a basic skin suit Enigma to get started.. There are thousands of skins and themes available in net.. We can even create our own skins and themes.. So, what I did was, Installed Rainmeter, downloaded no of themes and skin packs, then put those together to get the look.. Now I'll give you the theme I created with mixture of skins. You can try it.. You can also download other skins and make your own theme. It is depend on your creativity..
You can download skins from deviantart.com to make your own customized desktop..
Ok. That was the easiest part. The tricky part is to edit the existing skins to fit your needs. For example, you must edit the weather skin to add your location code.. These files are just text files with .ini extension which means those are the config files.. You can open those files by right click the skin and by clicking edit skin.. So, Install, play with it, ask if you have any doubts..

Here is the link to download my theme

Note: First you must install rainmeter, then Enigma Suit(optional) after that just double click the file downloaded from the above link.

How to Secure your facebook account from Hackers?

Today I would like to give some tips to secure your facebook account because I got no of requests in my inbox, asking me to hack a facebook account which has been hacked by someone else from the owner. (I don't believe such stories.. :) )
Nobody can HACK into facebook servers easily, but there is a chance that someone can compromise your account and get your password if you are not careful. However, facebook has a security feature such that if a hacker get your password also, he can't get into your account because facebook will ask additional code to enter when it is accessed from a unrecognized device, and that code will be sent to your mobile. So, If you aren't aware about this, read the following instructions to make your account safe..

01. Always use https connection instead of http
02. Use additional security features provided by Facebook
   A. Go to Account -> Account settings -> Security
   B. Click Edit on Login Notification And enable text and email notification. So,     you'll get a notification whenever your account logged in, and you can suspend  and reset the password using the email link if that login was made by some one else.
   C. Click Edit on Login Approvals

  D. Check the box "Require me to enter a security code each time an    unrecognized computer or device tries to access my account"

   E. Click Setup Now. You'll receive a code in your registered mobile

   F. Enter the code and click submit code.

   G. That's it. you are done. If you login from a new device, facebook will send a code to your mobile which you have to enter in addition to your login password.

How to make complex but easy to remember multiple passwords?

I was bit busy with my work and project so I couldn't allocate time to write down.. Today I wanted to share an easy way of creating complex, easy to remember passwords for your online accounts. Most of us use same password for all of account because we can't remember multiple passwords. But, this makes our accounts vulnerable, if one of our password compromised, we'll loose all.. The good example for this is, after LULZ hack the Sony play station accounts and released the emails and passwords, lot of Facebook accounts were accessed by others and created a bad situation. Even a FBI security personals email account was compromised because he used the same password for all of his accounts.
Now, back to the point, I wanted to share a simple trick to make your passwords.

01. Select a main password which is easy to remember. For example. If my name is anbu, Initial is J and last four digits of my Driving licence is 1234. I can create a main password using all of these combinations such as
anbu1234J or J1234Anbu or AnJ1234bu.. It can be anything which you can remember easily..

02. Add the online account name as prefix or postfix. eg. If your main password is AnJ1234bu, your Facebook password can be
fbAnJ1234bu, or AnJ1234bufb or AnJfb1234bu..
Make a standard which you gonna follow. prefix, postfix or in middle. So that you can easily remember the passwords. So, my yahoo password can be
yhAnJ1234bu, my gmail password can be gmAnj1234bu and twitter can be twAnJ1234bu.

03. Keep your structure as a secret.. :)

So, this may help you to create multiple complex passwords which also can be easily remembered. To make it more complex, make your main password with symbols, mixing capital and small, etc.. Use your creativity.. I hope this helps.. So, leave a comment about how you feel, and any ideas if you have about making passwords..

See ya..

How to Reset the Windows Administartor Password

Today I'm going to tell you how you can reset your windows password, in case if you forget those. I use this method for years when any of my friend comes up with the same problem. This method will work with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
The first thing in resetting password is, trying to login as Administrator. Windows has a default account called Administrator which more people forget to set a password while installing OS. You can login as Administrator by booting windows in safe mode. Then, login to the Administrator account without any password to reset your user account. But guys like me, never leave our account opened as we give password to default Administrator Account. In such case, we need to do something more.
In windows your passwords are stored in a location (C:\windows\system32\config\) as sam file which cannot be opened or edited directly when windows is running. But you can edit those by booting up from a linux kernal. I know lot of you are not familiar with linux, and also don't want to spend some time with typing in console. So, I came up with a linux kernal where all the commands to access the SAM are pre-loaded as shell scripts. So all you have to do is, download the kernal, setup your usb or cd, then boot your pc with that. It shows the options, and all you have to do is follow..
Download LinuxKernal.zip from here.. password "ruleyourpc"

How FIREFOX can be used as a Key Logger

I know you are surprised.. But it is possible up to some extend. Firefox keeps your browsing data as SQLite databases in your Firefox profile

folder. If I say browsing history, You may think it is just the details of visited web pages. But the fact is, it is more than that.. Firefox not only keeps your visited web pages, but also the data you entered.. Now most of you wondering whether you can get the saved passwords. But Fortunately those are encrypted. Ok. Come to the point, I'll explain you how you can check those data by using an open source browser called SQLite Database Browser. The data includes all you type in a web form except passwords. Which means, your credit card details are visible here.

Viewing the Firefox Profile Data

01. Download the SQLite Browser From

02. Open SQLite Database Browser, click open database under file menu or click the open database Icon.

03. Go to the Firefox profile folder. In Vista and Windows 7 it will be in C:\Users\ADMIN\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\2cbfl1k7.default (ADMIN is the user, in your case it may be your name or something)

04. Now you can see no of files with an extension .sqlite. Those are the files where Firefox store data.

05. Now open formhistory.sqlite with SQLite browser. The reason I mentioned this file is, it is the file where firefox store your form data. Thus, anything you've entered in a web page such as email, security answers, name, address, etc, etc

Actually I left firefox long ago because it eats lot of memory space. I like firefox coz of it's rich add on collection specially Grease Monkey which I used to automate lot of things.

Now, I leave it to you to discover the data which will be interesting.. :)

There are other .sqlite files contains data what the file name specifies, for example, the file downloads.sqlite contains the details of the downloads you made. So, open one by one and see what you got..

And, what about passwords? It is in signons.sqlite, but encrypted using your master password as salt. :)

So, try n discover, if you find anything interesting let me know, Pls leave a comment here..

The Lesson: Clear your History If you use a common computer..  :)

You can use your mobile to send an email to your PC to initiate shutdown. If you have any text to mail service, you can even send a text to do the job.

If you don't have one, create a twitter account, go to notifications and check "Email Me [] When I'm sent a direct message". Activate twitter mobile. Use your mobile to send a direct message to your twitter with the shutdown key word which you gonna set in step 06. Your text message will be forward to your mail and the shutdown process will be initiated.

Steps to Configure the Outlook Express

01. Go to outlook express -> tools -> rules and alerts

02. Create a new rule

03. Check messages when they arrive under Start from a blank Rule

04. Tick the check box “with specific words in the subject”, but you can give different conditions which are available in the above list if you understand the conditions.

05. Click specific words link which is in bottom panel.

06. Now give the phrase for the condition, I gave “shutdown my pc”. In this case the rule will be activated when an email arrives with the phrase “shutdown my pc” in subject of the mail. If you have selected different conditions, you have to provide the appropriate key word.

07. Click OK, then Click Next..

08. Now, you have to create a batch file (.bat): To create open a notepad, type shutdown –s –f (Here –s denotes shutdown, if you want to hibernate give –h instead of –s –f or if you want to lock give -l) Save the file as shutdown.bat (here you can give any name to the file, but extension should be .bat)

09. Tick the check box start application, then click application link in the bottom panel which is highlighted.

10. Select the .bat file you’ve created and click open.

11. Now click Next, Next then Finish.

That’s it, you’ve done..! Make sure your outlook express configured correctly and checks the mail automatically. If you don’t know how to configure the outlook express go here and read my blog.

If you want to shut down your PC, send a mail to yourself with the phrase “shutdown my pc” in the subject of the mail. Once that email arrives the inbox, your PC will be initiated to perform the shutdown process. To avoid, others sending mails to shutdown your PC, you can give conditions like “from people or distribution list” in step 04, addition to the word phrase condition, and define a fixed account which can initiate the rule.

Hope this will help you.. Feel free to comment or ask doubts, I’ll be here to help you..

How to Shutdown/Hibernate your PC automatically when It is Idle?

How many of you fell asleep while using PC, I do. And PC will be on whole night causing power consumption and heating up, etc, etc.. So I was thinking how I can make it shutdown automatically. I don't want to do it only with the specific time, but also with a condition that I'm not using it at that time. So, I found the way to do it, and wanna share it with you..
First we have to setup a Task in Task Scheduler which perform shut down, and we must specify the rules so the computer should not be shut downed if we are using it.

01. Go to Start ->All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Task Scheduler
or Just type Task in Programs search box to find Task scheduler :)

02. After Opening Task Scheduler, Just click create Task to create a Task for shut down.

03. Give a name to the task, tick the check box named Run with Highest Privileges(We need to do that because shutting down needs Admin privileges)

04. Click Triggers tab, click New, Give a time that usually you finish your daily work, Eg: In my case it is 12.30AM

05. Now Click Actions tab, click New, and then enter shutdown /s /f into the Program box..

06. Click the Conditions tab, and tick the check box to only start the task if the computer is idle for more than 30 minutes, and choose to stop the task if the PC isn’t idle to prevent shutdown if you are on the PC.

07. Now Click Settings tab, and choose to restart the task every 30 minutes or whatever time period you prefer if the task fails, so that if you are on the PC for a while longer than the usual time you have set in task, the task will be start up after 30 mins and shut down the PC.

That's it..!!! You've successfully Configured the task and contributed to the Go Green Concept..  :)

Feel free to comment here, and subscribe if you don't wanna miss any tips..

Reset BIOS Password without opening your computer Casing.

Today I've come a cross with a situation which one of my friend has forgotten his BIOS password and he exceed the limit of trials with wrong password. His system was showing the message "System Disapled [876453]"
Now what's the solution, You have to go to the service center of the computer manufacturer. Unfortunately his warranty period was expired. So he has to pay for them.

I just searched in web and finally solved that problem. I just wanna share it with you so you don't need to spend lot of time for searching..
All you have to do is,

1- note down the number which is being displayed with the error message.

2- Go to Dogbert's Blog who is a reverse engineer and a genius who doesn't charge anything for the key generators.http://dogber1.blogspot.com/2009/05/table-of-reverse-engineered-bios.html

3. Download the correct key generator according to your brand of the system.

4. Just input the error code which you got, and you'll have your master password for your BIOS..

It's quite easy huh??? Well It wouldn't be without Dogbert's effort.. Thanks to him.. :)

Note- If you are having probs in doing this, don't hesitate to message me. I'll do what I can to solve it..
